Natural Raw Manx Loaghtan Sheep Wool in 100g Batches.

These fleeces really are the nearest type of sheep a Norse community would have farmed 1200 years ago as they descend from the primitive sheep once found throughout Scotland, the Hebrides, and Shetland Islands. They are hugely different from modern, commercial sheep. For instance, they browse – not graze. In simple terms, they want – and need – a very mixed diet, not just grass like a modern Texel sheep. These sheep are given a very mixed diet of grass, tree bark, apples (from a local market), wild flowers, herbs and very occasionally a treat such as wholemeal bread.

The wool is very flexible in terms of their use. The lamb’s wool is extremely soft and luxurious and the adult sheep give wool which is tough and hard wearing. The Loaghtan's wool has a high coating of lanolin wax, also known as wool wax or wool grease and all the wool hand spins beautifully.

The Loaghtan's are very intelligent, extremely agile, hardy and sensible. Fortunately – and essentially – they are hefted. This means that they know where they live and won’t leave the area – an essential trait because they can’t be kept in with fences as they can jump maybe 5 feet in the air and double this in a long jump!

These sheep would have travelled well in long boats and would have been able to survive, and thrive, in even the harshest environments. They are also super tough and lamb very well.
