Heimdall is a god of the Aesir and a son of Odin, king of the gods. He is called 'the shining one' and has the whitest skin amongst the gods. He is also the watchman for Asgard, the gods' kingdom, and alerts the gods when anyone approaches the bridge Bifrost. He needs less sleep than a bird and can see a hundred leagues night or day. It is also said he hear the grass grow and the wool growing on sheep.
Heimdall has nine mothers. Jotun sisters sometimes referred to as the nine waves. In Heimdalar-galdr Heimdall states:
I am of nine | mothers the offspring,
Of sisters nine | am I the son.
His hall is called Himinbjorg which means 'sky cliffs' and he possess the Gjallarhorn, a horn that can be heard throughout all nine realms of Yggdrasil. The horn he will blow at the end of the world. This is called the Ragnarok, the twilight of the gods, and even Heimdall will die. The god Loki and Heimdall will battle and slay each other in the end, on Bifrost, the rainbow bridge.
