This book takes a close look at buckles, metal elements, horns, swords, helmets, shields, brooches, pendants and extracts the designs from them. It focuses in particular on certain European regions, including Scandinavia and England and a lot of the designs are from Gotland's Vendel era. The collection of motifs, copied from helmets and shields found in the graves of elite warriors from Vendel and Valsgarde, are especially eye capturing! Among the English designs, attention is drawn to the diverse and rich collection coming from the famous royal burial at Sutton Hoo.
The catalogue is complete with descriptions of the locations of each find with the most accurate dating, cultural context, and possible symbolic meanings, where possible. The internal cross-references will help the reader get a glimpse of aesthetic realities of the era!
